My Second Green Smoothie...I Think?

To be honest, the first one is a blur. I do know, that I have made a green smoothie before and it was gross! I made it with kale and for some reason it didn't blend all that well so I could taste the particles. Anyway, I made my second green smoothie this morning and it was delicious!

I'm on a new health kick with my bestie Stephanie, who writes this awesome blog called Food Gossip. It's based on this book called Eat To Live where you embark on a plant-based diet for six weeks and slowly introduce meat and dairy back into your diet if you choose to.

This morning, I made a recipe from his book called Eat Your Greens Fruit Smoothie. I blended almond milk, pomegranate juice, a banana, spinach, frozen blueberries and ground flaxseed. Halfway through the blended, I notice the smoothie was turning a brownish color and I thought YUCK! This looks like dirt! The color never changed once the smoothie was finished but I decided to take the plunge and try not to focus on that. My first sip was yummy! Here's the recipe:

Eat Your Greens Fruit Smoothie
Serves 2

5 ounces baby spinach
1 banana
1 cup frozen blueberries (or any berries)
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or soy/hemp)
1/2 cup pomegranate juice (or other unsweetened fruit juice)
1 tbsp ground flaxseeds (optional)
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Enjoy! xoxo

Free

I've been thinking about all of the things I can do for free. Moving has taken up so much of my time (and money!) and that doesn't mean that I should ignore the explorer inside of me. Brian calls it Cabin Fever. If I stay in the house for days, I get antsy and grumpy. It isn't necessarily that I need to be around people, I just need to get outside. Now that we have our own private patio, I will definitely be taking advantage of lazy Saturdays drinking tea or eating breakfast outside. (Once we get a patio table!) In the meantime, these are some of the ways I'd like to enjoy this season without spending a chunk of money.

-Drive up the coast of Pacific Coast Highway. I love having the beautiful ocean as my companion and we, Southern Californians, are so lucky to live near it. It's not five minutes away, although I have lived in places where it was but with good traffic, Malibu is about twenty to twenty-five minutes away. The ocean is a pleasure that we don't take advantage of nearly as much as we should. When I'm near the water, watching the sunset, I feel free. Even during autumn or winter, the beach is a magnificent, windy beauty.

-Go to the library. This has been on my list for years. The closest I've got is walking into Powell Library at UCLA but that was on my lunch break and I didn't get a chance to rediscover the place I spent so many years studying and contemplating things.Going along with my "No new books till I've read the ones I own" 2012 New Years Resolution, I never said I couldn't borrow! I have actually bought a couple of books this year but no novels! Only recipe or health books.

-Enjoy the park. We used to live right near Lake Balboa but now I have to drive to get there. I miss my bike rides. I especially miss the walks with my great friend Adelia where we would talk about anything and everything that was going on in our lives.

-Read. My bucket list for reading will never empty because I have yet to finish the book I've been reading for the last year The Elegance of the Hedgehog. If I could just get back into the swing of reading. Books and bubble baths...do they go together?

There is one thing I'd like to start doing that will require a little bit of money and that's ice skating! There a rink right down the street from our house and my goal for this holiday season is to bravely stop hugging the rail for dear life and learn how to do actually do a turn. I'd like to do a small turn and then learn how to do that endless turn like the skaters do and then put my leg up.

In time, in time, lol!

Weekend Update

**From the birthday party**

This weekend was great! We enjoyed our talented friend Fabio's birthday party on Saturday night, grilled turkey burgers on the back porch at our new place for the first time on Sunday and continued our Sunday night tradition of watching Dexter while folding laundry.

I was able to unpack two more boxes, clean the house and run all of my errands. I still had time enjoy the beautiful quiet of my home and watch the Avengers for the 100 millionth time while shredding old bills and papers. I love a productive weekend!

Road Runner vs Coyote

Yesterday evening at my weekly therapy session, I discovered that sometimes my to-do lists add more stress upon me than they alleviate it. I set my completely unpacked goal for two weeks and it's looking more like one month. What's my rush? What's my hurry?

Then I started thinking about other things in my life and how I feel like time is the Road Runner and I'm the Coyote. If I put so much pressure on myself to get things done, do I commend myself for the things I complete?

The truth is...not as much as I should. I need to pat myself on the back more and stop dwelling on how many more things I have to get done. I finally bought some new running shoes and that's been on my list for months! As soon as I bought them, my first thought was about what else I need to buy instead of commending myself for checking off a list item.

I think appreciation and acceptance will be my themes for awhile. I need to appreciate the process of settling into our new home and spend time going through boxes full of history, memories and donation-worthy items. I also need to accept that time shouldn't be something I chase, but rather something I dwell in and savor (like an unagi roll with avocado).

Anyone have their Halloween decorations up? This year, I want something spooky and cool at our place.

Clean Clothes = Happy Me!

We bought a washer and dryer yesterday off of Craig's List and I am sooo happy! Our previous washer broke and our old dryer works but since these were better quality, we snatched them up. The older dryer will be modeling itself on Craig's List very soon.

Let's just say that our laundry's been so piled up that I bought underwear from Target to get through the week. I attempted to do laundry after work the other night and one place was completely full and a worker at another said it was last call right when I walked in with a basket of clothes. I was beyond annoyed.

Yes, I could have washed some things out by hand but Ive been so swamped with work, figuring out dinner, adjusting to the commute and unpacking. Next time, by hand will be the way to go!

So now, thanks to my frantic hunt on Craig's List and my lovely Brian's man-strength, we have officially done our first load of laundry in our new place and I am a happy camper. Our next stop is to find a kitchen table, night stands and a treadmill. Gym memberships are sooo expensive and although our house is in a gated community, outside that community isn't the greatest of neighborhoods so running at home might be the best way to remain safe and stay active. We'll see...

It's the little (and big) things that make this house --which brightens my soul every time I walk inside of it--home.

**I'll post some pics once when we finish more unpacking;)
